Brewer High School’s student restroom mirrors have been removed as of this year. Brewer High’s new principal, Mr. Neal, shared his insight on this issue and provided reasoning for confused students.
“The mirrors were removed to reduce skipping. Students were hanging out in the restrooms during class time and using the plugs to charge their laptops and phones,” Neal said.
Mr. Neal made this decision to ensure students would be further engaged in the classroom. Without mirrors and plugs, few distractions are available for students, which makes them less likely to leave class during instructional time. This isn’t a punishment for students; it is a way to keep the restrooms clear and the classrooms full.
“It’s hard to tell what the long-term effect is going to be. We know we can’t fully eliminate skipping, but we’re trying to reduce it,” Neal said.
While the mirrors are greatly missed, if students act accordingly, there is a possibility of phasing back into having mirrors and reintroducing them in certain restrooms. Mirrors are a privilege and require responsibility, so students have to show that they are mature and can handle certain privileges.
While many students are angry and find this decision to be unreasonable, it is important to note how much time and consideration it took to put this decision into action and to address the issue of skipping.
“A lot of different things were discussed, and multiple layers were involved,” Neal said.
Many students are concerned about their appearance at school. While it is now more difficult to see your reflection due to a lack of mirrors and the phone ban, Mr. Neal suggests compact mirrors.
“I understand how you guys feel. And I am willing to hear your side, but there’s a fine line between a need and a want,” Neal said.
The primary purpose of school is to learn lessons so, use the removal of the mirrors as a lesson for the future. Consider the fact that there would be consequences at the workplace if employees vaped, showed their stomachs or ignored their boss.
The rules students follow now will prepare them for the real world.
