In Friday’s tight district match-up the visiting Colleyville Heritage Panthers clinched an intense win. Winning their eighth straight game, the Panthers grabbed a 58-53 win also taking first in district standings with the loss of Birdville. With the playoffs getting closer, the time is dwindling down for the Bears to clinch a top spot in the playoff race

The points were evenly displaced for the Bears. Scoring leader Curtis Moffett had 19 of the 53 points and all-star Devin Avent scored 20 points. With Avent and Moffett leading the team in scoring, they are largely dependent on for the team’s success and winnings.

“Devin is called on to do many things for this year’s team,” Coach Porostovsky said. ”He normally guards the other team’s best player, runs the offense, and gets his teammates involved. He gets rebounds, leads the break, and leads vocally as well.”

Curtis also has a high role on the team having accounted for 426 of the 1,482 points scored this season.

“Our team has toughness, we are tougher than any team in my opinion,” Avent said. “I love my guys I’ll do anything for them.”

When asked about what the younger class should do to get ready for Varsity Avent recommends staying in the gym and keep working hard.

Avent is also the only player on this year’s team to record a Double-Double (recording double-digit stats in two different stat columns) doing so four times so far. He has also recently joined the 1,000 Point Club.

“Joining the 1,000 Point Club is a tremendous feat,” Porostovsky said. “Devin Avent is the ultimate competitor, he loves to play and has a very high basketball IQ.”

“District and seeding is very important because if we win first [place] then it makes it an easier route to get to state and second through fourth [place] is hard because our bi-district is really tough,” Avent said.

With the loss to Colleyville, the season is not over for the Bears. The Bears went on to defeat Birdville in Tuesday’s following game and currently sit second in the district still fighting for the best spot, they will try to win out the season.
