Five days a week, students are required to wake up before sunrise and go to school for eight hours. During school, students are assigned classwork then on top of that, homework with no class time to complete it.
It’s true, education is important, but why should it completely consume children's lives?
According to a 2016 study published by The Saturday Evening Post, 91% of high school students reported that they are assigned homework. Another study by the National Center for Education Statistics shows that the average high school student spends about 6.8 hours on homework per week. Homework is meant to allow children to develop life skills and learn independently. However, many students question why children are assigned extra work when school already takes up most of their time.

School is meant to prepare students for when they become adults and get jobs. For the most part, school is treated as a job. We have consequences if we’re late, we have our bosses (teachers and administrators) and our responsibilities. However, the major difference is that once you clock out at your job, you’re done for the day. Most companies don’t give their employees assignments to complete at home so, why should schools give their students homework?

it’s important to consider how homework can negatively affect many aspects of students' lives. Including, mental health, sleep, physical health, social life, quality time with family and even make grades suffer. These are just a few of the detrimental effects that come from being overworked or overloaded by homework.
Students aren’t just students, they’re people with lives. Children don’t choose to go to school in the first place, but, if they show up and get their schoolwork done, they deserve to have their time at home to themselves. It’s understandable that classwork is given during instructional hours and if students choose to be off task during class, they have to complete it at home. However, school is for work, home is for students to handle their personal responsibilities. Giving students extra homework on top of all of their other responsibilities is inhumane.
In the 1930s, homework was considered child labor. In the 1950s, homework was used as a way to keep American children more educated than Soviet children. It’s clear that homework is a dated tactic that was never intended for the benefit of children.

If schools get rid of homework, children's mental health will benefit and therefore improve their performance in school. The mental health of children should be a top priority, as they are becoming adults and will eventually be the ones running the world. It doesn’t matter how educated a person is if they aren’t mentally stable.
