Graham Palmer, a Brewer High School student, athlete, and band member, is a perfect example of academic achievement and personified tenacity.

Palmer was born with an extremely rare condition known as Norrie’s disease. Norrie’s disease is an X-linked genetic disorder caused by a change in the NDP gene. Though NDP mutations are associated with various retinopathies, Norrie’s disease is among the most severe and is characterized by vision loss at birth or within a few weeks following as well as possible hearing loss and cognitive abnormalities.

When asked how he would explain it, Palmer stated simply that “It is a rare condition that causes sight and slight hearing loss.”

Norrie disease is incurable, and often can be challenging for healthcare providers to diagnose. Symptoms can be managed through procedures such as prophylactic laser treatment at birth and/or hearing aid augmentation- but the process is understandably overwhelming.

For those with a new diagnosis of this condition, Graham states “Stay strong, never give up, and keep rising.”

Because of his condition, Palmer has been blind since birth and has experienced gradual loss of hearing. However, this has not stopped the indefatigable efforts and strides he has made as a student. He has performed in the high school wrestling team and band, challenging the expectations of each person he’s come into contact with.

This goal is unrelenting, with Graham having stated that this year is his third in wrestling, second in band and he hopes to join the school’s track and run for his fifth year. Palmer has given insight that he loves proving people wrong, finding amusement and satisfaction in the shock others feel at his capabilities.

Furthermore, support networks can go a long way for those struggling with disabilities and other challenges. Representation, respect, and accommodations are crucial in order to help each individual feel an integral part of our community in a safe and respectful manner.

Though high school undoubtedly has its challenges for each individual, Palmer is a wonderful example of what students should excel to be. There are no limits to any individual who perseveres and refuses to accept what they’re told they should be. Regardless of starting point or background, much can be achieved and learned as individuals navigate their way through life.

On this, Palmer states that “Life isn't fair, but move on and stay positive in order to make it better. Integrity is something that helps individuals - without integrity things would not be great for the community.”
