For years, every campus in White Settlement has participated in the canned food drive. Students and teachers donate both food items and money to help support our district. Our counselors, as well as others, help organize this drive throughout the district.
At the district level, the food drive is organized by Mandy Jenkins and the Family Resource Center coordinator. As for the schools, the counselors organize at the campus level. Each campus is responsible for different canned foods, Brewer High school is responsible for canned pie filling, boxed pie crust, evaporated milk, and canned sweet potatoes. Money and grocery gift cards are also acceptable.
The food drive is done each Nov. to help as many families as possible in our community. “The food drive provides a traditional Thanksgiving meal to families in our district”, said BHS counselor Michelle Soileau. To encourage the participation of all students and staff, the food drive has become a competition. The third-period class with the most contribution wins a Chick-fil-A meal and movie day.
“Last year, the food drive served over 100 WSISD families! Our goal is to increase that number each year”, said Soileau. The impact of this food drive is greater than one realizes. Helping Families in our community is of great reward as we help others around us.
To help raise more money for the food drive, the BHS counselors organized the Corn Hole tournament, on Friday, Nov 12. Students were excused from their second period to participate in the tournament. In the span of three hours, BHS raised about 400 dollars.
