The Brewer High School girls’ basketball program has new talent this year. The first couple of games have been a rocky start, but they have been putting up a fight. They have been working hard every day to get where they are today.
Coach P and Coach Jackson are working with their players to get 1% better and achieve the goals they have set this year. The Bears' new players have shown that they are more than good enough to play on this year's team.
“Play hard, play smart, and play together,” Coach Jackson said.
His team has been putting in the work every day before and after school, until 6 P.M. He is the type of coach to push his players past their limits. The girls' basketball team is always ready to put in the effort, even his new players. Every game, the girls show up and show out no matter who they are playing against.
“I see myself playing whatever role the coach needs me to be,” Noelle Kennedy said.
You won't hear the girls complain about the position that they are in. As Noelle said, she’s ready wherever the coach needs her. Having a mindset like this takes you to very far places in this career. Being ready to come to work and motivate your teammates helps getting 1% better every day. Coach Jackson shows up for these girls, helping them get better every day with offensive and defensive skills.
During the initial training sessions, the coaching staff plans on focusing on “skill development and execution offensively and defensively,” Coach Jaskson said.
On the court, these new girls show that they can keep up with the players who have already been here. They show up and put in the same amount, sometimes even more effort than the players from last year. Chyler Reynolds and Brooklyn Tijerina are on offense, you know for sure that they will put that ball up in the air. They know how to keep that ball moving. You will rarely see them dribble the ball.
"I faced someone with better dribbling skills than me, so I got better at defense,” Chyler Reynolds said.
Chyler proved her defensive skills at the Dallas Carter vs. Brewer game. She was not letting anybody get past her. If she lost the ball, she quickly got on defense and stopped the ball. Chyler showed that her team can always count on her to play defense. She also knows how to bring energy to the court. Having good energy is needed when playing a sport like this; having a positive attitude and looking at mistakes as a team helps work towards a great game.
“They will make mistakes, and when they do, take that as a moment to learn from it,” Neveah Boaredinham said.
These girls have been putting in the work non-stop all year. Chyler, Brooklyn, and Noelle have shown that they deserve to have a place on the team. Even when they fail, they try to make it a lesson. Where others might see defeat, they see another challenge to overcome. What makes them remarkable is when they turn their setbacks into opportunities to become better every day.
